Career Search Help

This page is intended for individuals who seek short-term career coaching and
personal counseling as support during employment or career change.

Counseling is an expense a person does not need at this time.  At the same time, it
can expedite progress toward new employment. Walking alone in a job search can
be overwhelming.  Many people are helped and feel more stable when someone else
walks with them.  Together, they can find new ways because people have skills and
abilities that go unrecognized in the larger job market.

Working with career counseling tools, strategies and techniques can help:

  • gain perspective on economic and social change; what this means to
you and opportunity in your work life
  • identify new job options for your skills and interests
  • work with grief, depression, anxiety or other issues you experience
  • assessment resources to look at your skills, values and interest
  • strengthen personal presentation in media and in person:  resume
writing, electronic job application systems, job search tools, interview
presentation and practice, and the problem of downtime when searching
    for a job.

Individuals who enter career coaching work toward action.  We work together on
what those steps are, based on the used of career assessment tools, talk therapy,
and preparation, such as resume preparation, interview practice, and locating more
"hidden" job markets and networking.  The goal is to help you move forward in your
search and to not need job coaching.

You are encouraged to

The economy of the United States changed in extremis --- in the extreme ---  in 2008
and 2009.  Your personal experience, in addition to headlines in  our newspapers
and the internet, make this impact clear.  Our lives and the lives of our families are
not the same.  We are at a moment of great consequence.

Extreme change means most people experience substantial difficulty in one way or
another.  Pressure is brought upon everyone in the home. We may feel less tolerant,
we may feel differently, we may not like what we feel. Distress and stressors raise our
anxiety and worry.  Job loss is profound.  It hits hard.

These difficulties impact how we can live, what we think of ourselves, and what we
feel in our emotional health.

For those who have lost jobs, it is likely there many things in your heart and mind
right now.  Perhaps rejection, loss and grief, or confusion have a hand in how you
feel.  Perhaps you have a loss of energy or spirit. Layoffs, furloughs, shortened work
weeks, business unit or company closings ---  whatever name these events go by
may have delivered shock and change into your life, through no fault of your own.

Dealing with these events is difficult.  There is no doubt about that. Whether you are
younger or older, a man or a woman, married, single or partnered, these events and
the impact on your life are problems to be reckoned with.  These are problems to
solved.  It is not a time of "business as usual."

Sometimes we need to work with a supportive counselor to help find our way.
